Wheel bearings are the kind of maintenance that's easy to forget about until a trailer is smoking on the shoulder of I-985 with a wheel that's about to seize up entirely. Trailers that sit for long stretches in a storage lot near Oakwood or Buford, or that only come out for a Lake Lanier weekend a few times a year, are especially prone to dried-out grease and bearings that have started to pit from moisture that worked its way past a bad seal.
This is squarely towable-trailer work - bearings on the trailer's axle hubs, not anything related to a motorhome's engine or drivetrain. Tristan pulls the hub, cleans out the old grease, inspects the races and rollers for pitting or discoloration, and repacks with fresh grease or replaces the bearing and race set if it's too far gone.
It's inexpensive insurance against one of the more dangerous roadside failures a trailer can have, and it's a job that fits naturally into a mobile visit since the trailer just needs to be up on a stand in your driveway or lot.
Signs you need bearing repack
- Humming, grinding or growling noise from a wheel that changes with speed
- Wheel hub feels hot to the touch after towing
- Grease visible on the inside of a wheel or dripping from the hub
- Wheel wobbles or has noticeable play when rocked by hand
- Trailer hasn't had bearings serviced in several seasons or since purchase
- Trailer has sat in storage for a long period without being moved
- Burning smell from a wheel area after a long tow
What Tristan does
Hub disassembly & inspection
Tristan pulls each hub, removes the old bearings and races, and inspects them along with the seal for pitting, discoloration, flat spots or moisture intrusion - the early warning signs of a bearing that's on its way to failure.
Cleaning & repacking
Bearings that are still serviceable get cleaned of old grease, repacked with fresh marine-grade or trailer-rated wheel bearing grease, and reinstalled with a new seal so the hub is protected going forward.
Bearing & race replacement
When bearings or races show pitting or wear, he replaces the set rather than repacking around a part that's already damaged, since a repacked but worn bearing can still fail at highway speed.
Hub adjustment & torque
After reassembly, the spindle nut gets set to the correct end-play and torque spec, and the wheel is spun and checked for smooth rotation before the trailer goes back into service.
Why mobile beats hauling it to a dealer
Bearing service is routine, but it's also the kind of job that's easy to keep putting off if it means dropping the trailer at a shop and waiting. Tristan does it in your driveway or at the storage lot where the trailer already sits, which makes it much easier to actually get done before a long haul to the mountains or a lake trip rather than after a bearing seizes on the road.
It also means he can catch it as part of a broader look at the trailer - suspension, brakes and bearings all live in the same neighborhood mechanically, and servicing them together on site saves multiple trips and multiple times the trailer has to come off its wheels.

Questions we get asked
- How do I know if my bearings need repacking or full replacement?
- Tristan inspects the races and rollers once the hub is open. If they're clean and show normal wear, a repack with fresh grease is enough. If there's pitting, discoloration or damage, he'll replace the bearing and race set.
- My trailer has been in storage for two years - should I have this checked before towing it?
- That's a good time to have it looked at. Grease can dry out and seals can degrade during long storage even if the trailer hasn't moved, so checking before a long tow is worthwhile.
- Can you do this while you're out for another repair?
- Yes, it often makes sense to combine bearing service with suspension or brake work since the wheels are already off and the trailer is already up on stands.
- Do you service motorhome wheel bearings too?
- Tristan's bearing work is on towable trailer and fifth wheel axle hubs, not motorhome chassis components.
